About RunCosts

What it costs to run anything, where you live. One question, answered with the local price and the sum shown.

What the site is for

People ask "how much does it cost to run a space heater" and get a forum thread from 2012 or a retailer's blog with one national average. The answer depends on where you live: the same heater costs three times as much per hour in Hawaii as in Nevada, and a UK heater is priced on a cap that changes every quarter. RunCosts prices 29 household appliances at the real published rate for your state or country, lets you type your own rate and wattage, and shows the working.

Who makes it

RunCosts is published by Apex Digital Solutions, a software company that designs and operates data-driven web products. The same company publishes TakeHomeFacts, a take-home pay calculator for the US and the UK built on the same principles: official sources, the sum shown, a test suite on every release.

We are not electricians, engineers or energy advisers and the site does not claim to be. Its authority is its method: every price links to the statistical release it came from, every wattage range names its source, and the method page says what the estimates cannot know about your home. Where a figure is a typical range rather than a fact about your appliance, the page says so.

How it is paid for

The site is free to use and is paid for by advertising. Ads are clearly marked, never placed inside the calculator, and never influence which appliances are covered or what the numbers say. We do not sell products, take affiliate commissions from energy suppliers, or recommend tariffs.

Corrections

If a figure is wrong, write to hello@runcosts.com with the page and the source you are comparing against. Data corrections are made in the data file, so every page that uses the figure changes together. The data was last reviewed on 26 October 2026.
