The figures are estimates
A running cost on this site is a typical wattage or energy figure, times an assumed number of hours or uses, times a published average electricity price. Each page states its assumptions and lets you change them. Your appliance, your use and your tariff will differ, sometimes by a lot. The figure is a guide to the order of magnitude, not a prediction of your bill.
The prices are averages
US prices are state averages from the EIA, which blend every utility and tariff in the state and are revised after first publication. The UK price is the Ofgem cap for a default tariff paid by Direct Debit, averaged across regions. Your unit rate is on your bill. Use it.
Not electrical or safety advice
Nothing here tells you what an outlet, circuit, extension lead or installation can safely carry. High-power appliances such as heaters, dryers, water heaters, showers and EV chargers have specific wiring requirements. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and use a qualified electrician.
Not financial advice
Comparisons between appliances, fuels or tariffs are illustrations built on the stated assumptions. Decisions about buying equipment or changing tariff should be based on your own figures.
